Āyurvedic Herbalism
a course in dravyaguṇaśāstra
a course in dravyaguṇaśāstra
You’ve graduated from your Āyurveda course, perhaps your health counselor or practitioner certification, and the reality sets in that you need to know more about the various medicines and medicinal karmas of Āyurveda.
As a Doctor of Āyurveda, I remember this place well. I recall finishing my Āyurveda Practitioner program of study and thinking, “ok, now my studies are just beginning.” The complex cases that come through that go beyond the basics of what you learned. Perhaps its a male client who needs cooling but kapha is also high which means that if you give cooling it will aggravate kapha. Or maybe its a female client who needs cleansing because of a skin condition but she is also dealing with amenorrhea/lack of menstruation which means that if you give cleansing therapies it will counter any efforts to bring the cycle back. What herbs should you use? Which should you definitely not use? It can all feel so overwhelming.
In my personal story, I went to India to study under several masters of Āyurveda, when I returned to the States I embarked on a 4-5 year journey of intensive study in a classical clinical setting, and I worked at an established panchakarma center for 7 years all while pursuing my Doctor certification.
I knew the whole time that there needed to be a better way for new Āyurveda Health Counselors and Practitioners to gain the support and knowledge that would help them grow - especially in regards to the Āyurvedic herbalism / dravyaguṇaśāstra.
Day 1 and 2 will be discussing crucial philosophy that will guide us during the rest of the course. This will also inform your personal studies moving forward.
While we won’t spend our entire class in the classics, our conversation will be rooted in and expand upon the most important sutras pertaining to dravyaguṇaśāstra. (don’t worry, you don’t need to be fluent in Sanskrit or anything. It will be presented in a user-friendly fashion). However, your knowledge of Sanskrit will grow during this course.
This course will focus on learning the most important medicinal karmas, or actions, found in Āyurveda. A key part of success is being very clear on which karma is indicated and which is not.
In our exploration of medicinal karmas, we will explore which herbs in particular accomplish said karmas. For each karma, you will learn 2-3 herbs. This knowledge will enable you to more effectively wield them.
